Dog Training Maryland
Dog Training Basics
Training a dog is both an art and a science. An art because its success depends on one’s knack – the ability to be creative – much as teaching human beings is. It is also a science because there are basic concepts, models and aphorisms that training a dog requires. This article explores such basic principles and in so doing, points out the artistic concepts that the trainer needs to have, both of which underlie the success, or otherwise, in training a family dog.
Timing
This has to be impeccable when training your dog. Timing of praise and corrections must be appropriate and should happen when the behavior is happening. It will be too late correcting or praising the dog if it is not in the act you are trying to reinforce.
Consistency
Dogs only have this way of understanding things – always or never. Not maybe or sometimes. If you do not want him running after cars, he should never chase after cars under any circumstance. The easiest way your dog will miss a command is through the middle line and by the owner not following through on commands consistently.
Praise
It is very easy to chastise the dog when it does wrong, but even easier to forget to praise him when he does well. You need to be creative here, letting off your anger if he continually fails to do what you command him to do. However, when he does something good, rub on him and say ‘what a good dog you are’.
Fun
Try to end training sessions with fun and energetic games. It is a stress breaker after a long drilling session.
Firm
Be firm in telling your dog what to do – not asking him. If he misses the command, correct and show him. Firm, however, does not have to be mean.
Some basic, interesting training thoughts (from the standpoint of the dog)
1.My life is short, anywhere between 10 and 15 years. Please do not make it too rough.
2.Please allow me time to comprehend what you are saying. I am a bit slower than you.
3. I need you to trust that I am trying, and that I am not being deliberately difficult
4. Please do not be annoyed with me all day. You have friends, entertainment and work. You are all I have.
5. Please talk to me, even when you are angry. I know you know I don’t understand anything outside the commands, but I understand and love hearing your reassuring voice.
6. I have a very good memory. Remember that whatever way you treat me, I will always remember when I look at you.
7. Please do not strike or hit me. I know I cannot hit you back but I can scratch and I can bite and we both know we do not want me doing that.
8. Before you reprimand me for not doing what you say I do, or for being lazy, think for a second that maybe something is bothering me. Maybe I am not feeling well, or have not seen the sun for too long…
9. Let’s make a promise – we will take care of each other when we grow old. I know I will get there before you and that is why I am asking.
10. I will always be faithful to you. Even in training. I always am.
